I could see that headline running in the 1950s. "Gay getaways" Subhead: "Some of the happiest places to go"

Wow Beverly, I had to read that three times to even get the joke, must not be a product of the 50s, huh?

So the moral of the story is, "...if you're a gay Food TV personality / cookbook author, you can get free shit in D-town in exchange for an uninteresting, sappy 1000-word essay about said free shit."

It did have a bit of an advertorial feel, come to think of it, didn't it? But was it totally uninteresting?

Chester Dark

it was one long ad for the Sheraton and 301...not much else of value...

baci

er...shouldn't it be "gay-ta-ways"? not syain, just sayin.

Ruthie

It was uninteresting. I am glad they had a nice time and enjoyed the hotel but that experience could have been had in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Chicago, or any other number of cities with large four to five star hotels. They enjoyed their visit to a hotel, not Duluth.

Calk

good point, sounds like all they wanted to do was hang out at the hotel

Nate

Probably a good thing they didn't go to Duluth Family Sauna... but yeah, it's hard not to notice that pretty much everything they did was in the hotel.

I'm 100% pro-GLBT, but having just spent nine months teaching messed-up middle schoolers, the first thing that popped into my head upon seeing the headline was that any of them could have said it with a totally opposite meaning (as in, "Duluth is so f***ing gay").

udarnik

Rediguana, that's the funniest thing I've read all day.

er...um...I don't think messed-up middle schoolers exactly typify Lavender's readership. I'm fairly certain the author/editor are correct in presuming that few of their readers would identify 'gay getaways' with that connotation.

Thanks @andy for clarifying. I will be sure to look you up next time I'm having trouble with irony.

Ya, carmody's a gay bar... that's almost laughable. Why the hell dosen't D-town have any gay bars anyway???

Miguel

Oh, and the whole idea of the article was for advertisement. I read that article in the actual mag...

Well, I would like to say thanks for the props to the yeah..not so local business. BUT, they came here and said the word "Duluth" in a article. People will read it and hopefully they will make the trip up. Working for a small local business I appreciate it and hope it sparks some vacationeering (new word) minds! Huzzah!

Carla

I saw that article - called them and bitched. They were embarrassed.

And there is a HUGE difference between a couple gay friends hanging out at a bar, and a bar being a gay bar... When I go to The Twins, it isn't automatically a gay bar. When I go to RT's it is not automatically a gay bar. I'd say most of the people that go to that bar would have to be gay to consider it a gay bar. It also might be gay friendly, but that is also different :)
